Education: GIS Degree, GIS Diploma, or equivalent experience.
Physical Requirements: Sitting for extended periods. Packaged boxes may reach 50 lbs.
Skills / Experience Required: A skill testing exam may be administered during the selection process. In order to be successful, a GIS Technician at H2Safety Services must have excellent time management and multitasking skills as well as communication and problem solving skills. A GIS Technician must be detail oriented and inquisitive; these skills are essential to developing the required knowledge about our company and client standards.
Additional Assets: Understanding of the DLS system, experience with IHS and oil and gas data, thorough knowledge of Canadian geography, and the ability to read a survey.

Job Summary: - Under the direction of a Project Manager (PM) and GIS Manager, a GIS Technician organizes all activities involved in the development of new and update of existing Emergency Response Plan (ERP) maps. ERP maps provide a visual representation of a client's oil and gas operations and the potential hazard of those operations on the nearby public and environment. ERP maps also provide emergency response personnel with a method of visually planning the response to an incident.
- In the beginning of a project a GIS Technician may participate in project planning / development.
- Once the project is underway, a GIS Technician is responsible for updating and / or creating all maps associated with a project. The types of map developed by the GIS Technician vary based on the needs of each project and may include site specific maps, access maps (to provide directions to a location), contour or 3D maps (to show elevation), satellite maps, wall sized maps (for densely populated and large areas), etc.
- In order to advance in this position, a GIS Technician must develop a solid understanding of company and client standards as well as the applicable regulatory requirements.
- Once a GIS Technician has a firm understanding of their role, they may branch out into other areas including template development, development of new products, data management and automation, development of new procedures / training of new staff, etc.
